0x00 | Personal Background#
-
Weak in computer/software, ranked rk2 (1.5%) in both semester and comprehensive rankings for the first five semesters, CET-6: 590
-
Research: Only experience in reproducing some papers
-
Projects: Worked on a major project (backend: 2000 lines, frontend: 3000 lines, model/algorithm: 300 lines, data volume: about 5000+ records/month), achievement: solo national university information security competition third prize (August 2023, Zhejiang University Zijingang). Also worked on several small CRUD projects.
-
Competitions: Mainly focused on CTF, participated in various other competitions
- Cybersecurity: Over 30 CTF competitions, offline AWD, network protection, etc., won three or four national-level awards (this year's CISCN practical competition third prize, Fuzhou Ironman Triathlon national third prize in April), and over ten provincial-level awards
- Mathematical modeling: Mama Cup, Higher Education Society Cup, May Day Cup, Electrician Cup, etc., mainly performed well in the first year
- Development: Citi Cup, Software Design, Software Cup, Huawei Software Challenge, Service Innovation, etc., including frontend and backend development, robot scheduling development, deep learning model development, etc.
- Programming: Blue Bridge Cup, CCF CSP
-
Technical skills: Full-stack development, web security, designing and training/fine-tuning simple models in pytorch, familiar with C/C++/PHP/Python/Java/Go
-
Organizational experience: Web developer in Scr1w team, member of the Network Security Center, core member of the Open Source Association
Personal preference: Currently no intention to pursue a Ph.D., a Master's without a specialized Master's degree is also acceptable. I want to become a security researcher, but if that doesn't work out, I will pursue development.
Final destination: Fudan University Computer Science and Security
0x10 | Summer Camp#
Here is the registration and participation information for the summer camps:
Fudan University Computer Science (June 26-29)
Beihang University Computer Science (June 30-July 2)
Shanghai Jiao Tong University Network Security (July 4-5)
After receiving the offer from Fudan CS, I rejected most of the other summer camps because I felt that none of them were as satisfactory as Fudan CS (strong security group at Huawu). Additionally, I was tired from traveling between Beijing and Shanghai for 10 days and couldn't focus on studying.
0x11 | Fudan CS Summer Camp#
Fudan's summer camp follows the same process as previous years:
Introduction to different disciplines in the first two days
Volunteer selection on the second day evening, Fudan has a real-time system where you can see how many people have applied for each discipline
Computer-based test and English oral test on the third day
Professional interview on the fourth day, conducted by the laboratory teacher of the chosen discipline
I felt okay about the English oral test, but the other two parts were a bit challenging. I only solved two out of five questions in the computer-based test, and I didn't do well in the interview with Professor YZM. My answers for the 408 questions were not good...
I chose secsys, which is one of the most popular labs at Fudan. Many top students competed for the summer camp. There were only five spots in total (3 for Master's and 2 for direct Ph.D.), but there were nearly 20 people competing, with over ten Master's students competing for three spots. It was very competitive.
Result: Unexpectedly received an offer.
0x12 | Beihang CS Summer Camp#
Beihang's summer camp is known for its large-scale simulation in the computer-based test and the challenging math and 408 questions in the interview:
Introduction in the morning of the first day, computer-based test in the afternoon
Professional interview on the second and third days
The computer-based test had two large-scale simulations, 2 hours in total. I barely solved the first question. The professional interview was intense, focusing on probability and statistics. Additionally, there was an English translation section in the interview. I happened to get a difficult one and was asked to stop halfway through the translation. They also doubted that I had a CET-6 score of 590, haha.
Result: Waitlisted at 14th place. (80 offers and 20 waitlisted)
0x13 | Shanghai Jiao Tong University Network Security Summer Camp#
There is limited information available online about the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Network Security summer camp. I didn't research it thoroughly before attending, and I felt that the guidance provided by Shanghai Jiao Tong University was not very good.
Written test on the first day, including security-related questions (subjective) and math-related questions (cryptography, discrete mathematics, probability, linear algebra)
Professional interview on the second day
I didn't expect that Dean Gu Dawu would be present for the interview, but unfortunately, I was late and forgot to bring my resume and other materials, which was embarrassing. Shanghai Jiao Tong University didn't provide a detailed schedule online, only the start times for all the interviews. Unfortunately, I was the third interviewee. Maybe the offline classroom had the interview schedule posted, but I didn't know when I reported, so I didn't check.
Result: On the lower end of the waitlist, not accepted.
0x20 | Pre-recommendation#
I only applied for Wuhan University Network Security (September 26) for pre-recommendation.
0x21 | Wuhan University Network Security Pre-recommendation#
Wuhan University Network Security had an online interview for pre-recommendation, which was relatively easy. I didn't prepare at all and went for the interview without any prior knowledge.
Result: Offered a spot.
0x30 | Summary#
I am quite satisfied with the results, although I really wanted to go to Tsinghua NISL, but I know that I don't have research experience and my abilities are not enough :(
Back in my sophomore year, I wanted to do research with a professor, but unfortunately, my school's software institute didn't have any professors specializing in traditional security. At that time, I didn't consider finding professors from other schools, and now I realize that I made a mistake. Sigh, sigh.
I am very grateful for the support and help from the mentors in the Screw/Scr1w team. I achieved a lot and even had sponsored trips :)
CTF mentors who want to pursue further studies are welcome to contact me~
